With the stack of old blue jeans most of us have hiding in our closets, we could probably fill a stack of scrapbooks with blue jean pocket pages! It's such fun you'll want to try at least one. Decorate a denim pocket with your favorite iron-on patches and embroidery (or how about lace and buttons), then tuck an easy-to-make flower-power journal inside.

    Materials for Flower-Power Denim Pocket:

    Blue jean pocket
    Sewing scissors
    Steam iron
Embellishments for pocket (iron-on flowers, scraps of felt, rickrack and double-stick fusible web, perl cotton and embroidery needle)

    Materials for Scrapbook Page:

    12" x 12" cardstock
    Embellished denim pocket
    Fabric glue and foam brush
    Large book for weight
Scraps of cardstock for border and letters
    Craft scissors
    Glue stick
    Stickers

    Materials for Love Journal:

    2 pieces of decorative 8-1/2" x 11" paper
    Spray adhesive
    Ruler
    Pencil
    Craft knife and sharp blade
    Straightedge
    Craft scissors
To fill and decorate journal (photos, glue stick or photo adhesive, stickers, scraps of bright paper)

    Flower Power Denim Pocket

    1. Cut a pocket off an old pair of blue jeans, and press flat with a steam iron.

Big Pocket or Little Pocket? -- We used a large back pocket from an old pair of men's blue jeans. Two or three pint-sized pockets from toddler blue jeans would be perfect for holding tiny baby journals.

    2. Use sharp sewing scissors to carefully cut around the perimeter of the pocket (figure A).

    3. Decorate the pocket as desired with iron-on patches, scraps of rickrack or felt, and embroidery. Use little pieces of double-stick fusible web to attach rickrack or felt, then stitch over or embroider.

    Scrapbook Page

    1. Determine the placement of the embellished pocket on the scrapbook page and mark lightly with a pencil. We used 12" x 12" patterned cardstock for our large pocket.

    2. Turn the pocket face down and apply a liberal layer of fabric glue with a foam brush (figure B), then set the pocket in place on the page and weight it with a large book.

    3. After an hour or so remove the book and decorate the rest of the scrapbook page. Use bright paper for borders and lettering, and top with flower stickers and peace symbols.

Easy ABCs -- If lettering is a stumbling block for you, find words or an alphabet you like, enlarge or reduce your sample on a copy machine, then transfer the letters to colored paper. To transfer the letters, cover the under side of your enlarged or reduced copy with chalk or graphite, then place it face up on colored paper and trace over the letters with a sharp pencil. The pattern will be transferred to the colored paper below.

    Love Journal

    1. Two pieces of 8-1/2" x 11" paper form the front and back of the journal. Attach the two pieces of paper with spray adhesive.

Note: Always use spray adhesive with plenty of ventilation or outdoors. Avoid using it near children.

    2. Divide the 11" length of the paper into thirds. Measuring with millimeters simplifies the task. Eleven inches (280 millimeters) divided by three equals 93 mm. Measure and mark the paper (figure C).

    3. Lightly score the lines with an craft knife and straightedge (figure D), then fold the little journal into thirds (figure E).

    4. Add stickers, photos and notes to your journal, then fold and slip into the denim pocket.
