An easel back holds the frame/album combo upright, but can be folded back for storage when the display changes.

This desktop album is as cute and simple as can be. It looks like a single framed photo but is actually an accordion-fold mini-book, filled with photos. It's supported by an attached easel back and held together prettily with a satin ribbon. Make a simple baby book for a friend or relative, or if your baby's almost all grown up , make a "Katie book" like we did.

    Materials:

General scrapbooking supplies (photos, markers and glue stick or photo stickers)
    Heavy paper (6" x 24")
    Straightedge
    Ruler
Craft knife and self-healing cutting mat
    Bone folder
Cardstock for front and back covers
Cardstock or poster board for easel back
    Cover templates
    Easel back template
    Decorative paper (optional)
    Spray adhesive (optional)
Two 10" pieces of 3/8" ribbon

    1. The mini-book is 6" high by 4" wide and consists of six pages. Measure and cut a piece of heavy paper 6" wide by at least 24" long.

    2. Lightly draw horizontal lines 4" apart on the strip of paper. Score the lines with a bone folder, then accordion fold into a mini-book on the scored lines. If your paper is longer than 24", trim away the excess paper after folding.

    3. Use the cover template to cut a front and back cover for the mini-book from cardstock. The covers are 1/16" larger all the way around than the mini-book. Either the front and back covers can be solid, or the front cover can be cut into a frame.

    4. Adhere the cover photograph to the front cover, and set aside.

    5. The ribbon ties are attached to the middle of the outside edge of the front and back pages, and then hidden under the attached covers. Mark the ribbon placement at the middle of the edge of the front page. Apply glue to the paper, then place the ribbon at a right angle to the edge of the page. Glue at least an inch of ribbon to the paper.

    6. Glue the front cover to the front page. The ribbon will be sandwiched between the front page and the cover. Remember that the covers are a bit larger than the mini-book pages, so center them accordingly.

    7. Close the mini-book. Align the back cover ribbon with the front cover ribbon and glue in place. Glue the back cover to the back page, with the ribbon sandwiched in between.

    8. If you have leftover bits of ribbon, use them to decorate the front cover.

    9. Use poster board or a double thick piece of cardstock (glue two pieces together) to make a sturdy easel back. Trace the pattern using the easel back template, then carefully cut out. Make sure the bottom lines of the easel back are cut straight.

    10. Score the dashed line on the easel back and fold on the line. Glue the easel back to the middle of the back cover, being sure to align the bottom of the easel back with the bottom of the back cover (figure A -- on the template).

    11. Fill the mini-book with photos and journaling. If desired, use a glue stick or spray adhesive to attach decorative paper to the pages before adding photos (figure B -- on the template). Use the 4" x 6" template provided to measure the paper.

    12. Close your album, tie the ribbon into a pretty bow, and set it up for all to admire. If the album doesn't lie flat, press it under a heavy book for an hour or two.
