By Holly Christian Craft designer and writer Show your favorite fella what a manly sort of man you think he is! Give him heavy metal in the form a galvanized steel scrapbook. Use copper and brass hardware to hold it together and embellish with cutouts made of metal tooling foil. Our scrapbook shows off the talents of our favorite family handyman, sculptor Allen Christian, who has more tools and hardware than anyone we know. His love of all things hardware must be contagious. All I want for Mother's Day is a holster for my cordless drill! Click here for printable template for the featured Hardware Album. Click here for printable tool templates. Materials for Hardware Album: galvanized steel (2 pieces 11" x 11") hardware album template tool templates three 1/4" x 1/2" round-head machine screws (brass) three 1/4" -20 hex nuts (brass) three 1/4" lock-nut washers (steel) 4 small brass hinges tin snips or metal shears old scissors leather gloves ruler marker drill with 1/4" drill bit round or triangular file tooling foil, copper and brass foil-it adhesive-backed metal tape in copper and brass galvanized tacks burnishing tool (optional) J-B Weld Materials for Scrapbook Pages: canson Mi Tientes paper paper punch photos glue stick or photo mounting adhesive craft scissors scrapbook markers Note: The Hardware Album template is drawn half-size. Enlarge it 200% for an 11" square scrapbook. - Measure two pieces of galvanized steel 11" by 11".
- Use tin snips or metal shears to cut the galvanized steel to size. Be sure to wear leather gloves to protect your hands.
- Use the Hardware Album template to mark the placement of the three screw holes on the album covers.
- Use a drill with 1/4" bit to drill screw holes in the galvanized steel. Work carefully and stop the drill as soon as it is through the metal. Make sure the screws fit in the drilled holes. If necessary use a file to make the holes a bit larger.
- Refer to the template to mark the placement of the hinges and the hinge line (colored purple on the template) on the front and back album covers.
- To create the spine of the album, use tin snips to carefully cut along the purple hinge line.
- Edge the perimeter of the album front with copper adhesive-backed tape as shown in the photograph. Burnish the metal tape very thoroughly to make sure it stays attached. Use a burnishing tool if you have one, or place a scrap of tissue paper over the metal tape and rub vigorously with your finger.
- Use the templates provided to make copper and brass tooling foil cutouts of a hammer, saw, and paint can. Tooling foil can be easily cut with scissors but be sure to use old scissors for this job. For small areas, such as the saw handle, I use an old pair of manicure scissors reserved especially for this type of work.
- Use J-B Weld to attach hinges to the front and back covers, as indicated on the template. To insure a strong bond, follow the package directions carefully. Allow the J-B Weld to dry 4 -6 hours before handling and at least 15 hours before putting the object to use. If you try to use it before that amount of time, it's apt to break.
- As you attach the hinges, nip the heads off galvanized tacks and use them to cover the hinge screw holes. Spread J-B Weld on the back of the tooling foil cutouts and set them in place on the front of the album. Let them set up along with the hinges.
- Make scrapbook pages with Canson Mi Tientes art paper. Measure and cut the paper in 10-1/2" squares and punch holes following the album template.
- Following the template, create a fold line on the paper pages. If you like, you can fill the scrapbook pages before assembling the album. Add favorite tool time photos, paper cutouts, and journaling. A border of metal tape is a nice finish for the pages. Be sure to burnish thoroughly.
- The next day, when the hinges are fully affixed to the metal, assemble the album. Sandwich the scrapbook pages between the covers and hold it all together with brass machine screws. Thread the screws through to the back of the album, add hex nut and use lock nut to hold secure. You can always disassemble to add more scrapbook pages.
Products: Galvanized steel J-B Weld is available at your local hardware store. Canson Mi Tientes art paper and metal tooling foil, along with foil-it adhesive-backed metal tape can be found at crafts, art or scrapbooking stores.
