Bring a touch of the exotic Orient to your scrapbooking! Asian artisans are known for their paper folding talents -- a perfect embellishment technique for cropping!

This pretty little accordion-fold book would make a perfect gift for a grandparent or teacher. Fill it with kids' school photos (they just fit), personal notes and maybe a poem or favorite quote. Or make one just for yourself and fill it with fancy calligraphy and haiku poems. Use our templates (small frames, borders and decorative elements) to cut down on measuring.

An accordion book is made of a continuous folded sheet of paper, and can be kept flat or expanded outward to show off its contents. Asian design paper, like the origami paper used here, seems to fit small accordion books perfectly and no wonder, accordion fold books originated in Asia where they were used to accommodate long scrolls.

    Materials:

Piece of medium weight paper 4-1/2" x 28"
    Origami paper
Scraps of colored and white paper for decorating pages
    Ruler
    Pencil
    Scissors
Craft knife and self-healing cutting mat (optional)
    Glue stick
Photos, poems, notes to add to the pages
    Marker for scrapbooks

    1. To make an accordion-fold book base (figure A), begin by measuring and cutting a strip of paper. For an 8-page book with pages that are 3-1/2" by 4-1/2", measure and cut a piece of paper 4-1/2" high by 28" long. I found 30" long paper, enough for several accordion books, at my local art store.

    2. Fold the paper in half and crease the center fold (figure B).

    3. Open paper (figure C), and fold each end to the center fold (figure D).

    4. Fold each end back to meet the outer edge (figure E).

    5. Turn the entire piece over (figure F).

    6. Fold each end to meet at the center fold (figure G).

    7. Flatten folded paper (figure H), then expand (figure I).

    8. Now you can begin to decorate your book. Print out the templates on heavy paper and cut them out.

    9. The rectangular template outlined in blue is the size of the scrapbook page. Use it to trace and cut different pieces of origami paper.

    10. Glue a different sheet of origami paper to each page. Cover both the inside and outside of each page.

    11. Use the frame and border templates to add decorative elements to your accordion book pages, along with photos, personal notes, or whatever you like!
