Felt Blanket-Stitch Scrapbook Make a warm and cozy felt scrapbook to show off your snowiest winter photos. The album cover is made with a double thickness of felt edged in blanket stitch. Sheets of "blanket-stitched" cardstock serve as pages and a row of buttons holds everything together. You can avoid measuring your felt pieces by simply printing out the cover template and cutting your felt to size. Click here for additional instructions on creating a blanket-stitched page. Instructions and templates may be viewed by using Materials for making the scrapbook: Scrapbook cover template Photograph for cover, about 3-1/2" x 4-1/2" 4 pieces of felt, 8-1/2" x 11" (medium blue) 1 piece felt, 5-1/2 " x 6-3/4" (white) 1 piece felt, 5-1/4" x 5-3/4" (royal blue) Navy blue perle cotton White perle cotton Embroidery needle Sewing scissors 3 sheets of iron-on fusible web 10 buttons (5 large for the front, 5 small for the back) Several sheets of cardstock for scrapbook pages Binder clips to hold album together while assembling Steam iron Materials for the filling the scrapbook pages: Photographs White cardstock for snowflakes Snowflake template Bright cardstock for framing photos Glue stick Black marker Craft scissors - Following the cover template, cut out the felt pieces: four medium blue for the cover, one white and one royal blue for the front cover photo frame.
- Center the royal blue piece of felt on the white piece of felt. Use a bit of iron-on fusible web to join the blue felt to the white, taking care to only fuse the outer edge of the blue. A photo is slipped into the blue frame later, so it's necessary to leave a flap of the blue felt open.
- Blanket stitch around the blue frame with white perle cotton (figure A).
- Fuse the white and blue frame to the center of one of the large blue pieces of felt, following the placement shown on the template. Then blanket stitch around the white frame with navy blue perle cotton.
- Put a layer of iron-on fusible web between the front cover and a second piece of felt, and fuse together with a steam iron. Use a medium setting when pressing felt to avoid meltdown.
- Fuse together the remaining two large pieces of felt to form the back of the scrapbook.
- Use navy blue perle cotton to edge both the front and the back cover with blanket stitch.
- Score a vertical line 1-3/8" from the left edge of the cardstock pages, then fold back and forth on the line. This will allow the pages to open flat when the scrapbook is assembled.
- Use the steam iron to press a similar fold line on the left side of the felt covers.
- Mark button placement on the front cover, following the template.
- Sandwich the cardstock pages between the felt covers and hold in place with large binder clips. Sew the scrapbook together, using buttons and perle cotton, with larger buttons on the front cover and smaller at the back. If you're making a scrapbook with lots of pages, you may want to pierce holes into the cardstock to help the needle get through.
- Slide a photo into the cover frame of the scrapbook.
- Fill the scrapbook pages with scenes of winter fun. Add snowflake cutouts to the pages and finish each page with an edging of blanket stitch, drawn on with a black marker.
