Michele Gerbrandt layers torn paper, then punches the layers to create small border vignettes. Check out her technique!

    It's A Shore Thing

    Materials:

    Dark blue paper
    Cloud patterned paper
    Sand patterned paper
    Blue, light blue and white
    Background paper
    Coordinating paper to mat photos
    Lettering template
    Pencil
    Scissors
    1-1/2" square punch
    1-1/4" square punch
    Adhesive
Pen to journal (or use computer fonts)

    1. To create the border, first design your background scene. Cut vellum, cloud and sand paper into 3" x 12" strips. Tear along the edge of each of the vellum sheets and the sand pattern paper (figure A).

    2. Layer and adhere the torn strips to build the scene. Layer the strips so that the torn edge of each strip is showing and begin with the cloud paper as the base layer, then add the blue vellum allowing about 1/2" of cloud showing above the torn edge. Next, layer the light blue strip allowing the blue vellum torn edge to show, followed by the white vellum and finally the sand patterned paper (figure B). Tip:To adhere the vellum so the adhesive doesn't show, use a spray adhesive or Xyron machine.)

    3. Next, use the dark blue paper and the 1-1/2" punch to punch 7 squares. Using the 1-1/4" punch, turn the punch over and align the layered beach scene within the cutting area and punch (figure C). Move the punch down the strip and punch the next scene out and continue until you have 7 squares. Mount the scene squares onto the dark blue squares and then adhere the border along the bottom of your page (figure D).

    4. Use the same torn paper layering technique to create the photo corners by cutting a square in half diagonally and the "Shore" word in the title and cut out using the lettering template or letter punches.)

    5. To complete the page, mat photos on coordinating paper and adhere to page. Tear long paper strips for title and complete with a pen and layered "Shore" word. Journal using a computer, print on white vellum and layer over a photograph.
