This fishing page was created by hand-tearing all the elements -- an easy way to create texture and complement the rustic outdoors theme.

Eldenburg uses the autumn leaves in the photos as a catalyst for her tree design on the left.

The same technique works well for beach photos -- featuring elements of sand, sea and sky.

Designer Becky Eldenburg creates pages celebrating the great outdoors by first looking at the background scenery in her photos. Here, Eldenburg shares a technique for building horizons with DIY Scrapbooking host Sandi Genovese.

    1. After looking at the background elements in the photograph, select the shades of cardstock you'll be working with.

    2. Begin working at the bottom of the page. Tear the cardstock into strips and layer as desired to build "strata." Adhere to page with acid-free glue.

    3. Continue "stacking" the torn strips (figure A) until you have achieved the look you want.

    4. Mat photo on one of the same shades of cardstock used for the horizon. Tear the edges of the mat (figure B), then adhere matted photo to a second shade of cardstock. Tear the edges of the second mat and adhere to page.

    5. Use same technique to mat and mount additional photos, then add sticker embellishments and a title to complement the overall look and theme of the page.
