Designer Joy Macdonell offers tips for combining a page layout and color scheme that best complements your photos.

    • First, select photos with the same theme (for example, outdoor shots of your child), then examine for a common color theme (the child is wearing a shade of pink in each). If the selected photos don't have a common color theme, then select colors of cardstock that will unite the photographs.

    • Assign dominant, supporting and accent roles to the colors in your theme. Dominant colors are generally the cool or darker colors, while accent colors are generally the warm or lighter colors. The supporting color is medium. Keep these proportions in mind: 70 percent dominant; 20 percent supporting; 10 percent accent.

    • Use page design template to assist with the placement of colors and photographs.

    • Select embellishments that will enhance the design, theme, colors and photographs on the page.
