Although it's an ancient decorative paper art, kirigami reminds many croppers of the "snowflake art" they once created in elementary school! This technique, however, is a bit more sophisticated -- creating lovely dimensional elements for any scrapbook page.

Many scrapbookers are familiar with the art of origami -- the decorative Japanese paper folding technique. Less well-known is the art of kirigami, which in translation means "cutting paper." Like origami, kirigami begins with the folding of a thin paper, but ends with the cutting of shapes into the folded edges.

Designer Linda Price shares the technique with DIY Scrapbooking host Sandi Genovese.

    Materials:

Thin paper cut into a square
    Scissors

    1. To create flower shapes, begin by folding square of paper diagonally to create a triangle. (Paper can also be folded accordion-style into a long strip to create a background design.)

    2. Fold the right corner of the long edge of the triangle to the top of the triangle. Repeat on the other side to create a diamond shape (figure A).

    3. Fold diamond shape in half along center fold. Make cuts at various positions on either side (figure B), taking care not to cut through to the other side. (In this example, Price and Genovese cut a curved outer edge for "petals" before cutting the design). Tip: The more cuts you make, the more delicate and intricate the design will appear. Alternately, punches can be used to create the design, instead of cutting.

    4. Once you have finished cutting, carefully unfold the design (figure C). Flatten between books for future use, or adhere to page.
