Creating Keepsakes Creative Editor Becky Higgins shares a simple, free-form folding technique that adds dimension to embellishments and titles. Materials: Sheet of light brown cardstock Sheet of dark brown cardstock Pale yellow cardstock Green cardstock Two autumn-colored cardstock scraps Brown chalk and chalk applicator 4 mini brads Thick needle or 1/6" hole punch Alphabet stamps and ink pad Adhesive Paper trimmer Mini pop dots Brown pen - Trim light brown cardstock approximately 4" - 4-1/2" wide and mount strip to left side of dark brown cardstock.
- Next, mount 2 vertical photos to the left strip so they are touching.
- Then, tear a strip of yellow cardstock on both top and bottom edges so it measure approximately 2" tall. Place this strip in a horizontal fashion reaching from the left strip to the right side of the page. Journal on the torn strip.
- Mount two additional photos on cardstock (creating a thin mat), then adhere mounted photos to bottm space on page.
- Next, cut 2 strips of green cardstock, each measuring 6" long and 3/4" tall.
- Fold each strip every 3/4" to create an accordion-style strip (figure A).
- Then, use alphabet stamps and ink to stamp "Giving" and "Thanks" -- one letter per folded square (figure B).
- After stamping all letters, use chalk and chalk applicator to lightly apply chalk to each fold.
- Next, punch a hold in both ends of the strip using large needle (figure C) or small hole punch. Add mini brad to each hole, pressing clasp open on back side of page. Repeat for second title strip.
- Use autumn-colored scraps to hand-tear two small leaves. Fold a crease in each leaf from tip to tip.
- Add color and definition by adding chalk to crease and torn edges. Adhere leaves to page using pop-dots to elevate from the page.
Variations: This same technique can be adapted to any shape or page theme. For a hand-torn star, simple draw a star in pencil, then hand-tear (figure D). Tip: Higgins suggests using a two-tone paper with a light color on the front surface and a darker color on back. To create dimension, fold each point of the star from the edge to the center (figure E). Die-cuts/templates provided by Ellison Craft & Design. For more information about Ellison, see Resources.
