The width of each line is controlled by pressure -- and how much of the brush touches the paper with each stroke.

To create dimension, use different shades. Add a "flick" of color at the edges to create a gradient.

Designer Susy Ratto shares a few tips for successful brush marker strokes.

    • For best results, use a high-quality laser paper when practicing strokes.

    • Store flexible-tip brush markers horizontally. This will keep the pigments evenly distributed.

    • Next, hold the pen so that the side of the brush makes contact with the paper while forming strokes. The pen angle determines the width of the stroke.

    • To taper the pen stroke and create depth, simply "flick" the brush up or down at the end of a stroke.

    • Color can be layered at the top or the bottom to create a gradient effect.
