The paper roses -- which embellish most of the page -- spring forth from punched designs that are curled, then layered, to look like petals.

To add dimension, use ink to deepen the tips of the lighter petals.

A starfish punch is used to create leaves at intersection of the corolla and stem.

Punch art designer Kate Childers designs a paper rose page to honor her mother (who enjoys floral design and arranging). Childers uses beach-themed shell punch designs in a new way -- to create flower petals and leaves.

    Materials:

    Jumbo Conch Shell punch
    Large Starfish punch
    Large Conch Shell punch
Three shades of paper: two different shades pink or red for petals; green for leaves
    Embossing tool or cotton swab
    Quilling tool
    Glitter gel pen or glue
    Acid-free adhesive
Accent pen (in color slightly darker than petals)

    1. First, punch two conch shells from the first two paper shades. Adhere petals in opposite directions to a small rectangular square of hand-torn paper.

    2. Next, punch a few more petals. Use an embossing tool or cotton swab to "bend" each petal in the center. Adhere over the first two base petals, gluing opposite ends over the center.

    3. Layer a few more curved petals, then use accent pen to slightly shade the edges of the lighter petals.

    4. Next, punch starfish shape from green paper. Adhere to base of rose petals.

    5. Twirl a length of green paper around a quilling tool to make a dimensional stem. Adhere to base of rose.

    6. Use conch shell to punch a few shapes from green paper. Curl paper and adhere one to each side of stem. Use glitter gel or glue to accent leaves and give the appearance of "dewdrops."

    7. Adhere base card to page and add others as desired.
