Miller decided to hide the journaling -- a crucial element of heritage pages -- under the photograph. The result was achieved by folding a small strip on the mat, then securing it to the page. Journaling was added on the back of the cardstock mat. Often, shiny new materials and accents can be jarring to the eye when combined with the soft patina of old photographs, documents and cherished mementos. Artist Jill Miller has the perfect concept: distressed frames with a vintage look.

Materials:

Black cardstock
Coarse grade sandpaper
Pearl Ex powdered gold paint
What's New, Ltd.B. Tuscany printed paper in gold
VersamarkB. ink pad
MarvyB. classic gold pen
Scissors
Adhesive

1. Miter corners of black cardstock by making 1" cuts (figure A)

2. Fold and crease each edge of cardstock inward to create a folded 1" border (figure B).

3. Then, use coarse sandpaper to sand each flap in long, vertical stroke (figure C) while paper is folded over to back side (this will protect the other surfaces from becoming marred).

4. Next, brush Versamark across all sanded sides, then stipple or brush the gold Pearl Ex over the surface (figure D).

5. Repeat technique on torn flap of black cardstock.

6. Brush Versamark and gold paint over coordinating mat paper (figure E). Mount to torn black cardstock. Mount photo to the sanded, painted mat.

7. Trim black inset paper to fit behind the photo and secure. Add journaling to complete the page.
