Michele Gerbrandt, from Memory Makers magazine, demonstrates the proper technique for inking a baby's foot to create keepsake footprints.

In the past, proud parents were often sent home with a new baby, a birth certificate and impressions of baby's hands and feet. Today, hospitals rarely provide this keepsake to new parents. However, Michele Gerbrandt has a technique that will preserve those tiny handprints and footprints as part of a baby album.

    Materials:

    Scrapbook page
    Non-toxic, pigment-based ink pad in a medium-dark color
    Soap and water (for clean-up)

    1. For best results, bring ink pad to baby's foot or hand to ink. Coat baby's hand or foot thoroughly with the ink (figure A).

    2. Press scrapbook page firmly against the baby's hand or foot, then remove page quickly.

    3. Allow the impression (figure B) to dry before continuing with page design.

    4. Use soap or water to remove pigment-based ink.

    5. For older children, handprints can record growth and can be a fun activity to share. Here, Gerbrandt repeats the technique, but rubs multiple colors of ink (figure C) on a small child's hands to create a rainbow effect (figure D).
