A sports album is a great way to feature all the players on a team, or showcase a winning season. Here, designer Ruth White shares her techniques for creating simple sports gift books.

    Materials:

    swivel knife
    cutting mat
    regular and elongated oval templates
    square and/or rectangle templates
    ruler
    acid-free adhesive
    paper trimmer
    brads
    black, burgundy and gray cardstock
    vellum
    black die-cut letters
silver craft paint or paint pen

    1. First, decide on a general layout for the album. Keep the pages simple and the layout consistent throughout. Here, White has decided on a gray and black theme, with each player's page receiving the same border style to highlight the photos.

    2. To create the portrait page, cut black cardstock into 1-1/2" strips, 2 per page.

    3. Then, cut burgundy cardstock into 1-1/2" strips for the facing page.

    4. Next, tear the light gray cardstock lengthwise down both sides. Tear cardstock wide enough to cover the black strips.

    5. Then, adhere black strips to page, leaving a very narrow white border edge. Adhere gray cardstock on top of strips, covering the inside edges.

    6. Mount player's portrait on black cardstock, and mount in center of gray cardstock (figure A).

    7. Use die-cut letters to spell each player's name and adhere to page. Print player stats on vellum and adhere to page with brads painted silver.

    8. Select photos and position (figure B) and crop action shots into shapes using swivel knife and template. Tip: White suggests keeping close-up action shots in one shape, while those that are taken from a distance should all be cropped in another for consistency.

    9. Cut mats in same shape as photo in a coordinating color (or team color). Mount each photo, then adhere mounted photos to page (figure C).

    10. When album in complete, color copy, bind and present as a gift to each player (figure D).
