The same technique is a great complement to pages featuring the great outdoors. The hand-torn edges give the feel of earth, water and sky.

It's time to tear up your titles! Designer Vicky Breslin shares her technique for creating letters and title blocks with handmade flair.

    Materials:

    Red, white and blue paper
    Lettering template
    Pencil
    Craft knife and ruler
    Acid-free adhesive or glue

    1. Begin by cutting red and blue paper into 2" strips. Hand tear strips in half.

    2. Then, cut white paper into strip approximately 2-2-1/2". Adhere the blue and red hand-torn strips to edges of the white, leaving a thin white area showing between the strips (figure A).

    3. Next, place lettering template face down and backwards on back surface of the combined red, white and blue strip (white side should be face up).

    4. Trace letters (in this example, "America" is traced), and use craft knife to cut the outlines.

    5. After cutting letters, tear two remaining red and blue 2" strips in half. Arrange and adhere to edges white paper -- this time, allowing a larger band of white to appear in center.

    6. Arrange and adhere tri-color letters to the red, white and blue title strip ( figure B). Adhere completed title strip to page.

    7. Use same technique to tear and assemble tri-color stars. Add to page.

    8. Mat photos to page and embellish as desired.
