The harsh shadows cast on this boy's face and tree are caused by direct sunlight. Taking the photo in morning or late evening -- or even in the shade -- would provide a well-lit, clear result.

Don't be afraid to take close-up shots. Black and white photography is strongest when the photo frames the strength and beauty of facial features.

For Joy Macdonell's tips for clear, dramatic black and white photography, watch this video!

Black and white photography can offer timeless drama often unparalleled by color photography. Joy Macdonell offers tips to make the most of black and white photos.

    • Contrast -- "Train your eye" to look for good contrast between the foreground subject and the surrounding environment.

    • Prints -- When taking candid or portrait shots of friends or family members, avoid snapping the subject wearing busy prints and bold stripes. These prints draw the eye away from the subject and are unflattering.

    • Natural light -- Whenever possible, try shooting outdoors in natural light. Early in the morning or late in the evening (just before sunset) is the optimal time to reduce harsh shadows.

    • Experiment -- Don't be afraid to fill an entire shot with the person's face. In addition, unusual angles (sometimes taken without looking through the viewfinder) can produce unexpected beauty or a new perspective.
