Black and white photography can offer timeless drama often unparalleled by color photography. Joy Macdonell offers tips to make the most of black and white photos. - Contrast -- "Train your eye" to look for good contrast between the foreground subject and the surrounding environment.
- Prints -- When taking candid or portrait shots of friends or family members, avoid snapping the subject wearing busy prints and bold stripes. These prints draw the eye away from the subject and are unflattering.
- Natural light -- Whenever possible, try shooting outdoors in natural light. Early in the morning or late in the evening (just before sunset) is the optimal time to reduce harsh shadows.
- Experiment -- Don't be afraid to fill an entire shot with the person's face. In addition, unusual angles (sometimes taken without looking through the viewfinder) can produce unexpected beauty or a new perspective.
