Paper pleating is a great way to create a hand-sewn look -- without any stitching! Watch this video to see Anna Griffin's technique.

Anna Griffin has a great way to complement heritage photos -- paper pleating. The technique results in a page with the look of a vintage pillow!

    Materials:

3 sheets of a softly patterned paper
1 sheet each of 3 different patterned papers (all in coordinating shades)
    Vintage-look die-cut picture frame
    Portrait to fit frame
    Burnisher/stylus
2 yards matching satin ribbon, cut into eight 9" pieces
    Ruler
    Removable adhesive
    Craft knife and cutting board
    Pencil
    Chipboard

    Pinch Pleat

    1. First, use pencil and ruler to mark vertical guide lines on back surface of first paper selection. ...Mark every 3/8" and every 1" alternating across the page horizontally. Score along each mark vertically. Fold the first score forward and then the next score back towards itself, skipping the 1" in between, to make a box pleat.

    2. Then, use burnisher to score the pencil lines (figure A) and make folding easier.

    3. Begin folding back and forth on the creases, accordion or fan style (figure B). Continue until entire page is pleated.

    4. When paper is pleated, it should be about 3" wide (figure C). Begin cutting horizontally across the strip to create smaller 2" strips.

    5. Unfold the 2" strips and apply removable adhesive to back surface. Follow original lines to re-pleat (figure D).

    6. Begin applying smaller pleated strips to the edge of the page to create a border. Overlap pieces as necessary and miter the corners (figure E). Repeat steps 1-6 until the entire page border is covered with pleated paper.

    Box Pleat

    1. Measure and mark paper from edge at 1" and 5/8" intervals as in step 1 above.

    2. Score lines with burnisher.

    3. Begin pleating on scored lines from left edge to right to create a larger, "box" pleat (figure F).

    4. Unfold, apply adhesive, re-peat and attach to page just inside the pinch pleated border.

    5. Repeat box pleat technique until border has been created.

    Finishing the Page

    1. Cut chipboard to fit inside the two borders. Cover with paper cut to same size.

    2. Adhere covered chipboard to center of page inside borders. Add photo and vintage style frame.

    3. Finish with title or journaling as desired.

    4. Affix bows or tied ribbons to each corner.
