Although this wreath is a terrific complement to this photo, don't hesitate to alter the design (even using a square frame) to best enhance your photo.

Looking for a colorful way to highlight special birthday photos? DIY Scrapbooking host Sandi Genovese has two! Using candle die-cuts, Genovese creates a candle border and wreath that helps capture and preserve the celebratory spirit.

    Materials:

    Candle die-cut or punch
    Assorted shades of plain paper
    Assorted patterned paper
    Acid-free adhesive
    Stickers or other embellishments
    Photographs

    Birthday Candle Wreath

    1. Begin by measuring the photograph, then cut a narrow frame in a shape that is complementary to the photograph's shape (figure A). In this case, a paper ring was used. Tip: It's important that the frame's color match the background page. It should disappear once candles are added.

    2. Next, use a die-cut (or craft knife) to cut candle shapes. Cut die shapes from gold and multi-colored paper. To create a festive appearance, keep gold candles whole, but snip the flame off each multi-colored candle. Affix the multi-colored bases to the gold candles.

    3. Arrange the assembled candles around the frame (figure B). When pleased with the arrangement, adhere the candles to the frame.

    4. Mount the photo to the page and adhere finished wreath over it; alternately, mount the wreath directly to the photo and adhere entire piece to page (figure C).

    5. Add embellishments as desired.

    Border

    1. Follow the same technique to create candles. However, instead of adhering the finished candles to a frame, instead adhere them to a strip (figure D) that matches the background (in this case, black).

    2. When candles have been affixed to the entire strip, mount the strip directly to bottom of scrapbook page.

    3. Double mat photographs and place on scrapbook page as desired.

    4. Embellish with additional candles and a silver pen (optional).
