Photographing memorabilia is a great way to capture a moment in time and preserve special memories. Often, the equipment or souvenirs add to the "story".

Miller used an 8.5" x 11" color print as a background for her page. She attached it to card stock to create a sturdy page.

Memorabilia should be photographed on a plain background. This will minimize the "busy-ness" of the page once additional photos are placed on the print or enlargement.

Many vintage items -- like this pen collection -- are contained in shadow boxes, mounted or displayed in a permanent way. To capture the image without disassembling the collection, simply photograph the item. To get the best results and augment the vintage look, shoot in late afternoon sun (with natural light filtered through a nearby window). This will create a warm glow and soft shadows.

The completed page includes the vintage pen collection, heritage photographs, and a background that is a "mirror" image of the writing featured in the shadow box.

Sometimes memorabilia is simply too large for placement in a scrapbook. Photographing memorabilia is a great way to showcase mementos while adding to the mood of a page. Here, Anne-Marie Spencer offers tips for getting the most impact from memorabilia photos.

    1. First, it's important to arrange memorabilia with an idea of what size page you'll be working on. For an 8.5" x 11" page, the memorabilia can be spread narrowly, while a 12" x 12" page requires a "square" arrangment.

    2. Leave blank spaces within the arrangement for the addition of other photos on the background page.

    3. To create the background, simply photograph the arrangement and have it enlarged or printed from a color copier. Mount the copy to a sheet of cardstock or sturdy background page.

    4. Add photographs, a header and journaling to the memorabilia background as desired.

    More Tips for Managing Memorabilia

    • Gather and photograph memorabilia at the end of a season.

    • Include photographs of children's uniforms, shoes and protective gear as another way of recording growth and capturing childhood memories.

    • Use a simple camera with 400-speed film and flash (or a digital camera) to photograph memorabilia.

    • Arrange memorabilia so that it looks attractive and fills the camera's viewfinder when you look through the lens.

    • Take several shots from different angles.
