Although the lettering and flowers might look like typical scrapbooking details, they're actually embossed elements that add dimension to the page.

Scrapbooking educator Joy Macdonell offers tips for embossing pages using an embossing stylus.

    Materials:

    Embossing stylus and templates
    Paper or cardstock

    1. The embossing tool -- or stylus -- is very much like a roller-ball pen without ink. It has a larger nib on one end and a smaller nib at the opposite end for more intricate embossing (figure A).

    2. To begin embossing, place paper or cardstock face down over the embossing template.

    3. Then use embossing stylus to rub over the indentation (figure B). This creates a debossed image on the back side, but an embossed (raised) image on the front side. Mistakes are hidden on the back surface.

    4. To create flowers (or other shapes), the same embossing technique is used. After embossing, tear around image and add to scrapbook page as desired (figure C).

    5. For lettering, use the same technique as in steps 2-4. The embossed letter templates create a defined edge (figure D), making letters easy to cut and apply to pages.
