Paper-folding is found in the cultures of Japan (origami) and Holland (teabag folding), and now in American scrapbooking. Author and scrapbooker Kris Mason demonstrates how two folding techniques, the triangle fold and the kite fold, can create beautiful borders, wreaths, and frames. Triangle Fold Materials: Craft knife or scissors Ruler Adhesives Patterned paper - Cut paper into two squares.
- With patterned side up, fold paper horizontally in half to create a rectangle. Crease edge.
- Open rectangle, and fold square in vertically in half to create another rectangle. Crease edge.
- Open flat and turn paper over so that printed side faces downward.
- Fold upper left corner diagonally to meet lower right corner (figure A) and crease edge.
- Open triangle and fold lower left corner diagonally to meet upper right. Crease edge.
- The creased edges allow the paper to bend at the creases as it's pushed together. While holding triangle, push corners toward center (figure B) and flatten to create a layered triangle.
- Continue creating triangles.
- To join triangles, hold two triangles with closed points facing in the same direction. Slide top flap of first triangle between two flaps of the other triangle (figure C). Push together carefully so the pieces fit snugly. The point of the inserted triangle shouldn't extend past the outer edge of the other triangle.
- Secure with adhesive and repeat until entire wreath (figure D) is created.
Kite Fold Materials: Craft knife or scissors Ruler Adhesives Patterned paper - Repeat steps 1-7 for triangle fold.
- Open right flap of layered triangle until it's aligned with center crease (figure E).
- Use pencil to open the edges of the raised flap.
- Keeping center creases aligned, remove pencil and press flat. Crease both sides of center flap to create the "kite" shape (figure F).
- Flip folded piece over and repeat steps 2-4.
