    Figure B

Barb Lashua of Fiskars demonstrates how decorative-edge scissors can make a variety of cuts that can be used for matting or decorative elements. By turning and flipping the scissors, you can make up to five different cuts with one pair of decorative-edge scissors. Lashua demonstrates the unique effects that you can achieve.

    • When making a cut with decorative-edge scissors, Lashua says, it's important to make small cuts, never cutting to the tip of the scissors. A full cut breaks the decorative pattern.

    • To create chains, Lashua cuts "bites" from a folded edge. She makes a second cut about 1/2 inch away from the first (figure A).

    • To create a braid, Lashua holds two pieces of paper back-to-back and cuts two identical strips, about 1/4 inch apart. Lashua separates the strips and then braids them together (figure B).
