Constructing a genealogy chart or family history is an activity in which all family members can participate.

Author and genealogy expert Maureen Taylor shares methods for uncovering ancestry and building a family history.

    • Write what you know: Create a chart to organize information. Fill in as much information as possible, including maiden names, nicknames, surnames and dates and places of births, deaths and marriages.

    • Solicit the help of relatives: Consult home documents, then ask relatives to contribute any documents or information that might fill in gaps.

    • Interview family members: Be sensitive to family members' reluctance to talk about the past. Be sure to make lists of questions and be thorough in the interview process. It's impossible to take notes fast enough once people open up, so bring along a tape recorder or video camera to record the interview.

    • Research: Use the Internet for research and contact libraries and archives for information. Genealogy Web sites allow searches by family surname, allow users to consult with an expert, and can create a network of people who can offer new information. These sites also include message boards, chat rooms and forums where messages can be posted to request specific information.

    • Verify information: Not all sources of information (including the Internet) are reliable, so be sure to find documents to support data.
