Carol Snyder, an author and lettering artist, shares creative lettering techniques. Snyder says the secret to lettering success is to work on the ends of letters. She recommends the use of a double-ended marker with thick and thin tips but says a calligraphy marker can also be used.

    • Dot lettering is a simple type of lettering achieved by adding dots to the ends of a letter's lines (figure A).

    • Shadow lettering is best used when there is a "light source" -- like the sun -- appearing frequently in the photographs on a page. A word is written with a thick line, with a thin line drawn at the edge to create contrast and dimension (figure B).

    • Template lettering allows the user to trace letters inside template letters for more intricate lettering.

    • Tilted letters add a touch of whimsy and are created by tilting letters in different directions as they are written.

    • Sticker letters can be creatively used to take the place of letters (figure C).
