Many people dislike their own handwriting and are reluctant to write on their scrapbook pages, but sometimes the right marker or pen can make all the difference. Suzanne McNeill, founder of Design OriginalsB., offers ideas, tips and techniques for lettering, drawing borders, journaling and decorating pages with various kinds of markers.

    Materials:

Design Originals Better Borders book #5046
    Design Originals Alphabet Stickers
    Markers and pens
    Wavy rulers
    Off-white or pale-blue paper

The ZigB. calligraphy pen makes wide strokes. It's great for making bold titles or making frames (figure A).

The SakuraB. pigma pen with a .30 tip makes a fine line and is good for making small dash lines or hatch marks. Another Sakura has larger tips and makes a slightly larger mark (figure B).

Markers are great tools for more than lettering. Use them to make fantastic borders. Try alphabet stickers combined with markers for worry-free lettering and to make stripes, dots, stitch marks, polka dots and borders (figure C).

A brush-tip pen makes a softer mark and is good for making wavy lines or scallops (figure D). Practice with different pen tips before writing on the album page.

    Calligraphy Tips

Use a light pencil mark to space the lettering. If you can't bring yourself to mark on the page, write on a separate sheet of paper, cut out the wording, and glue to the page. Use a template to trace the general size and outline of the letter, then go over it freehand with a marker.

Always test a small area first to be certain the ink won't bleed through the scrapbook pages.

The angle of the pen is very important. Hold the pen almost vertically so the entire pen tip is in full contact with the paper. It may seem awkward at first, but the result is greater control while lettering. Use a permanent-ink pen for long-lasting lettering.

When the ink is dry, lightly erase the pencil marks (figure E).
