Paper Piecing is a great technique to add a touch of charm to your pages, while utilizing smaller pieces of paper that are left over from other projects. One of the best ways to get started in paper piecing is with the help of a pattern and idea book. Here, designer Paula Siebers uses a paper piecing pattern (which comes with an idea book) to create a whimsical snowman page. Click here for the featured "Welcome J. Frost" patterns. - Begin by cutting pattern shape and placing it face down on the back surface of your paper selection. Use a pencil to trace around the shape (figure A), then use craft knife to cut shape from paper.
- Next, apply chalk to the edges (here, Siebers chalks the darker hats, so they look "snow-dusted") of the hat pieces, using white chalk and an applicator. (Tip: a small make-up applicator works well.) For best application (figure B), work from the outer edge, brushing inward (chalk will concentrate on edges, then fade away as it blends inward). Chalk all pieces before assembling.
- Draw facial features onto snowmen -- first in pencil, then ink -- then, erase any errant markings. Use chalk to add "rosy" cheeks to snowmen.
- Next, begin assembling and adhering the pieces. To assemble to top hat, use craft knife to cut a slot in the hat brim and slide a portion of the head through the slot to secure (figure C). Adhere remaining hat pieces, and add embellishments as desired.
- Assemble all remaining pieces and adhere to page.
