Traveling is often hectic, and memories are often lost as special moments go uncaptured and rolls of film are misplaced. With only a little planning and pre-vacation preparation, you'll bring back photos and memorabilia worth showing off.

    • Purchasing supplies: Purchase rolls of film in bulk to save money and have plenty available. An X-ray bag (figure A) from the photo store will protect film during airport checks. A backpack or travel bag with lots of pockets will organize supplies, memorabilia and film to be developed after returning.

    • Record-keeping techniques: A little record-keeping on vacation can go a long way in getting organized later. Film canisters and envelopes should be numbered, with the number and subject matter recorded in a notebook (figure B), voice recorder or digital assistant.

    • Gathering memorabilia: Include plastic zipper bags in your camera case to store memorabilia and markers for labeling. Store ticket stubs, shells, leaves or postcards in the bags and use the marker to write notes on the bags. Page protectors should be used for brochures, maps and other paperwork. Several pieces of cardboard can keep items from bending.

    • Camera care: Label your camera with name and contact information and keep it in a protective case inside your travel bag for protection. Matching the camera type to travel conditions (i.e., a waterproof camera for tropical vacations, or a disposable camera for kids) results in happier travelers and better photographs.
