    Figure D

Designer Jennifer O'Byrne layers several chalked motifs to create unique themed letters.

    Materials:

A variety of chalks, letters templates and themed templates
    Adhesive notes or index cards
    Black marker
    White markers

    1. In this example, O'Byrne uses adhesive notes to block off letters she won't be using (figure A). This creates a cleaner chalked area. Mistakes can be removed with an eraser.

    2. Next, O'Byrne chalks the letter (figure B) and removes the template. A smaller thinner letter template is placed over the chalked letter, and O'Byrne erases within the template to leave a white area within the first letter. A marker is used to fill the erased area with color (figure C).

    3. A themed template (in this example, sunglasses) is placed over the letter and is shaded in with marker. A white marker is used to add highlights to the letter and the themed overlay motif (figure D).

    4. The technique is repeated until each letter in the title is complete. Then, the title is cut and mounted. Additional themed embellishments and pictures are added to complete the layout.
