Designer Rebecca Ludens uses vellum to create sewn see-thru windows that house shaker materials and other embellishments. Here, she uses the technique to accent a pre-school page.

    Materials:

    1 sheet vellum
1 sheet printed paper or solid cardstock for window background
    Sewing machine
    Gold thread
    Background paper for layout
Punched designs, confetti, beads or other small "shaker" materials

    1. Print poem, quote or other desired information -- and title -- on vellum. Trim poem and title to desired sizes, leaving at least 1/2-inch "seam allowance" around all the words. Print a motif, if desired, then color on the back surface of the vellum for a softer look (figure A).

    2. Trim one piece of cardstock or printed paper for frame and backing, 1/2" to 3/4" larger than poem and title.

    3. Use ruler to mark 1/2" from each end and side for fold guides. Use burnisher or other tool to score lines for easier folding (figure B). Fold toward center on scored lines.

    4. Cut corners from mat at the corner of fold lines at a 45-degree angle (figure C) to create a mitered corner.

    5. Place shaker materials on cardstock backing. (Material can be adhered with adhesive, or left loose.) Place vellum poem and title on top. Trim or adjust for good fit.

    6. Fold one edge in over vellum, and machine sew with gold thread, catching both layers of cardstock with the vellum in between (figure D). Avoid using adhesive to hold the cardstock edges in place -- the adhesive may leave residue on your needle. Use a straight stitch on a long (basting) setting. At the corner, turn the window box 90-degrees with needle still in the paper. Fold down the next side and sew. Repeat until all sides are sewn; backstitch at beginning end for strength.

    7. Adhere to layout and complete with photos and embellishments as desired.
