Highlight a favorite cake recipe -- or birthday page -- with a glazed stencil that looks good enough to eat! Watch this video to see more of Judy Joyce's technique!

Love to stencil? Here, designer Judy Joyce uses stencils and embossing powders to create a page that takes the cake!

    Materials:

    Red cardstock
    White cardstock
    Turquoise cardstock
    Yellow cardstock
Pigment stamp ink in primary colors, assorted brights and brown
    Clear and/or poly-sparkle embossing powder
    Thermal embossing gun
    Decorative-edged scissors
    Low-tack masking tape
Black 10" or 12" album page
    Birthday photo, trimmed square
    Copy of favorite cake recipe
American Traditional Stencils in BLM-422, Alphabets and Numbers
Stencil brushes in 1-1/8" and 3/16"
    Glue stick or adhesive

    1. Center photo on white cardstock, leaving 1/4" border. Use adhesive mount or glue to attach. Trim the mat with decorative-edged scissors.

    2. Mount photo and white mat to red cardstock. Trim red cardstock to 1/4" border and set aside.

    3. Next, center birthday cake stencil on 3" square of white cardstock, attaching with low-tack tape. Stencil frosting with light brown ink (figure A), then remove stencil.

    4. Sprinkle clear embossing powder over the stenciled image, then brush excess away.

    5. Use thermal embossing gun to heat the powder until it turns dark and shiny (figure B), with a glazed appearance.

    6. Replace stencil and repeat process to stencil the candle and flame.

    7. Stencil cake layers last, without embossing.

    8. Trim around the embossed, stenciled cake and set asied.

    9. Trim yellow cardstock to fit album page. Choose a number from the numbers and alphabets stencil (Joyce used "3" to represent the third birthday celebrated in the picture).

    10. Randomly stencil the number over the right hand side of yellow cardstock using assorted bright colors of pigment ink.

    11. Trim turquoise paper 1/2" wider than the matted photo, but 1/2" shorter than yellow paper. Use adhesive or glue stick to mount on left side of yellow paper, allowing 1/4" of yellow to show.

    12. Mount matted photo to turquoise paper, with recipe underneath.

    13. Fasten trimmed cake piece onto corner of recipe, then place page in album.
