Watch as Melissa Inman shares a technique that produces the look of stained glass.

Melissa Inman shares her technique for making the most of black pages: creating an embellishment with the look of stained glass!

    Materials:

    White cardstock
    White paper
    Black cardstock
    Craft knife
    Pencil
Red, gold and dark green vellum
    Red brads
    1/8" round hand punch
    Adhesive
    Bugle beads
    Wire

    1. Trace a poinsettia design (or any design of your choice) onto white paper.

    2. Use craft knife to cut the pattern from the white paper, leaving at least 1/8" border between the leaves and flowers.

    3. Use hand punch to punch a few holes through the round poinsettia center.

    4. Use pencil to trace the pattern onto a bottom corner of black cardstock.

    5. Following traced pencil lines, use craft knife to cut the design slightly larger than the pattern (figure A). Erase any remaining pencil lines.

    6. Use black cardstock "scraps" to trace shapes onto colored vellum (the slightly larger size of the scraps will allow the vellum to be easily attached behind the openings in the black cardstock).

    7. Turn black cardstock over and apply vellum shapes over the corresponding openings (figure B). Apply adhesive to the black cardstock before adhering the vellum.

    8. Double mat photos using both green and gold vellums. Position and adhere to page.

    9. Print title on yellow vellum, then mount with title photo onto red vellum. Punch holes in all four corners of the yellow title strip, then secure with red brads.

    10. Create a beaded embellishment by stringing bugle beads onto wire. Attach to page by poking wire ends through the page, then twisting on back surface.

    11. To complete the page, add a piece of white cardstock to the back surface of the black cardstock to "illuminate" the stained glass design and hide adhesive and wire twists.
