The crumpled paper, twine, metallics and seashell die-cuts combine to create a cohesive page design.

Miller covers the photos with vellum, then tears a portion away. The torn edges -- as well as the soft, semi-transparency of the vellum -- work together to augment the overall look of the page.

    Figure A

Once you've developed the confidence and skills to try advanced pages, think about combining scrapbooking materials to create cohesive page designs. Here, artist Jill Miller commemorates her dog's first trip to the beach by creating a textural tribute.

    Materials:

    Pre-printed paper
    Light brown cardstock
    Rub-on metallic creams
    Dimensional tape
    Frosted clear vellum
    Light brown eyelets
    Seashell die-cuts
    Lettering template
    Black marker or pen
    Thin brown twine

    1. Crumple, then smooth, pre-printed paper. Use metallic creams to highlight details or design elements in the paper, if desired. Tear edges of paper and mount on brown paper using dimensional tape.

    2. Trim brown cardstock to mat-size, then accent edges with metallic creams (applying with fingertips, if desired).

    3. Cut vellum rectangles to same size as photo. Layer vellum over photograph, then mat both on brown cardstock. Secure with brown eyelets at all four corners.

    4. Look through vellum for the focal point of the photo, then tear the vellum away from that portion (figure A).

    5. Accent seashell die-cut with metallic cream. Then, double-wrap twine, knotting through the seashell center.

    6. Stencil desired letters on cardstock using template and metallic creams, then outline with black marker. Mount to page.

    7. Add any additional words or journaling using the black marker.
