To make die-cut pieces stand apart, use small, contrasting "mats" to border the shapes.

Depending upon the paper texture, color and pattern selected, paper piecing can have a simple, charming appeal, or a more complex Impressionist look. Here, Janice Lowe shares a line of patterned papers based on the works of Impressionist painters.

    • Use different shades of the same pattern together to create a background effect. Create your own pattern by using your punches and stencils to cut designs that can be adhered to other pieces of paper in the same pattern.

    • Create contrast. To distinguish special die shapes from the background, create a thin, surrounding mat in the shape of the die to create an outline.

    • Use your tools and materials. Use your existing tools to personalize patterned paper. For example, exaggerate the pattern or add more color with markers or pens.
