For some pages, only embellishments done by hand will do. To get more "oomph" from your ink, check out Suzy Ratto's pen techniques!

Artist Suzy Ratto shares a few of her "secret" pen techniques.

    • Stamping. Use a brush tip marker to "stamp" an imprint of ink onto the page, in the shape of a teardrop (figure A). This technique is ideal for creating flower petals, leaves, hearts, and many other designs.

    • Sideloading. This technique involves blending two different colors. First, make a few strokes with a dark marker on a piece of plastic (Ratto uses acrylic, but any non-porous surface should work). Next, use a light colored marker to brush through the dark color, picking color up on the marker's tip (figure B). Brush stroke on paper to blend the two colors and create a gradiated effect (figure C). To clean the brush tip, make a few gentle strokes on another paper until marker is clean.

    • Stamping with sideloaded pen. Repeat technique, touching brush tip against paper. To vary the effect, stamp with brush tip in for darker centers, or with brush tip out, for darker edges or tips.

    • Double lines. Create double lines by dragging the scroll end across the paper without pressing down.
