Designer Judy Joyce shares her techniques for creating "antiqued" effects that hide smudges and other misapplications. - Dry brushing. A good technique to "age" paper edges and hide smudges. Simply brush color from the outside of the paper's edge, working inward, with a light swirling motion. Reapply to build up color as desired. This same technique can be used around photos, stenciled motifs (figure A) or to create an entire background page.
- Using border stencils. Increase the versatility of border stencils by using only one, small motif from the border (figure B). Secure with masking tape and stencil a background (with the single motif) that will complement the entire border.
- Dry embossing. Enhance your pages with raised images. Use an embossing tool and light source (a window or light box) to trace raised images onto vellum. Simply attach paper to the front of a stencil and trace the outline of the stencil underneath the vellum (figure C). Turn the paper over to reveal the raised image (this same technique can be done on paper or cardstock). If desired, turn paper over and dry brush color inside the embossed lines (figure D). Subtle color will show through when the paper is turned over.
