On this variation, the flap is folded over and "fastened" in place by a button embellishment. Records and mementos simply slide behind the envelope.

A larger envelope can be created to house a report card.

Report cards, certificates and other school documents add richness to school pages, augmenting the history documented by photographs and journaling. Here, Andrea Grossman shares her technique for using envelopes to organize and displays these important keepsakes.

    Materials

    old or new envelopes
    pencil
    plain paper
    scissors or craft knife
    acid-free glue
    patterned paper in contrasting shade
    embellishments, if desired

    1. First, select an envelope sized to the memento that will be displayed on the page. Steam open old envelopes so they can be opened flat and used as a pattern.

    2. Place the opened envelope on plain paper and trace around the edges using a pencil (figure A).

    3. Then, cut the pattern from the paper and use straight edge to crease and fold flaps.

    4. Apply glue to edges. Fold side flaps of envelope in, then fold bottom flap up (figure B). Leave top flap open.

    5. Create a second envelope by drawing pattern slightly smaller.

    6. Cut and fold the second envelope and place on patterned paper.

    7. Next, trace around the second envelope — with top flap extended.

    8. Cut second envelope shape and use it to line the first envelope.

    9. Journal on a decorative border card and add to envelope (figure C) or simply add the school records or documents.
