This photograph is an example of how tinting can be used to achieve more dramatic effects. Purple was used to tint

Joy Macdonell shares her secrets for softly tinting black and white photos. With only a few strokes of a pen, Macdonell recreates the look of a vintage hand-tinted black and white photograph.

    • First, spread invisible color softener over the area to be tinted. The color softener allows color to be applied evenly without streaking.

    • Then, begin applying color in a circular motion (figure A). For best results, work in small areas and apply small amounts of color (more can be added later).

    • Matte black and white photos yield the best results when working with this type of product. However, tinting pens are designed to work on most photo surfaces and are quick-drying.
