The softness of theme, texture and color all work together to create this page, "The Beauty of Children."

A variety of color can be achieved by applying "mottled" colors. Simply cover your hands with plastic bags, dab onto an ink pad, and transfer a variety of colors to the paper.

By placing paper over a placemat, Gerbrant produced the texture needed for this colorful tiki hut.

The crinkled, aged look of this background paper is a perfect complement to a heritage photo. The effect was achieved by "crunching" the paper up, then applying chalk for soft color.

If you'd like to begin adding texture to your pages, watch this video to see Michele Gerbrandt's "crunching" technique.

Michele Gerbrandt demonstrates several techniques that create a variety of textured paper effects.

    • To create a softly mottled background, place a plastic bag over hands. Pinch all fingers together and dab onto an ink pad. Dab directly onto the page (figure A). Mix colors as desired.

    • Borrow a texturizing technique from childhood! Place paper over a textured surface (in this example, a placemat was used) and rub over paper's surface with a colored pencil (figure B).

    • Brush over mesh webbing or screen with ink to create a "tiled" background effect (figure C).

    • Crinkle paper several times. Unfold slightly, then crunch between hands from different angles to thoroughly crease and texturize as much of the paper surface as possible. Repeat several times. When finished, flatten paper. Use chalk and cotton ball to sweep color onto page.
