Designer Joy Macdonell demonstrates a few tools that make creating borders easy. Using the tools, Macdonell creates a "tunnel" border for her page.

    Using Border Tools

    1. The Border Buddy template (figure A) is a good tool for cutting and tracing, especially when combined with a Blade Runner (a cutting tool with a swivel tip). To use, hook the Blade Runner on the edge of the template before using.

    2. When using the swivel-tipped cutting tool, always look down the tool's barrel (figure B) to check placement of the blade while cutting.

    3. Cut along the side of the template, then flip the template.

    4. To cut the border, place the template a few inches away from the first cut and make a second cut.

    5. Embellish the border as desired and add to page.

    Tunnel Border

    Materials:

Classic Border Buddy with tunnel design
    Scrapbook page
    Blade Runner or craft knife
    Colored markers
    Pencil with eraser

    1. Place border template on page, positioning the tunnel row where desired (Figure C).

    2. Use a pencil to mark registration in the marker hold at the end of the tunnel row.

    3. Use markers to fill in any portion of the tunnel row, then shift the template up or down, so that new cutouts are layered over the previously drawn tunnel row. (Align marker holes for correct placement before drawing.)

    4. Again, use markers to fill in tunnel openings as desired.

    5. Erase the penciled registration marks.

    6. Enhance the tunnel design as desired.
