A variation on the same paper piecing technique created this butterfly embellishment.

While both of these pages were created using the same paper piecing techniques, a different effect was achieved on each. The reason? Scrap pieces were carefully selected to create a coordinated look.

Paper piecing is a great way to both use paper scraps and create a unique page element that looks like a quilt applique. It can really enhance a page theme -- as this candy corn die-cut does for this page. To see how this was achieved, watc

Paper piecing is a great way to add applique-style embellishments to your page, and is an efficient use of all those paper scraps you've been holding on to. Here, designer Paulette Jarvey demonstrates her technique for using scraps to reproduce the look of a quilted applique.

    Trick or Treat

    Materials:

    Fall and Halloween papers
    Paper Piecing Pattern Book
    Black pen
    Acid-free stick glue
    Pastel vellum
    Color or b/w photo

    1. Crop and mat photo with a 1/4" orange mat. Then, mat again using a black with white paper, leaving 1/4" mat. Finally, follow with a white mat.

    2. After matting, select the paper pieced design that best complements the theme and colors of the photo. In this example, a candy corn pattern is selected.

    3. Select papers that match the pattern selected. If using the candy corn pattern, select orange, yellow and white.

    4. Trace the pattern in the book onto a blank sheet. Place tracing over paper and cut (figure A). Alternately, carbon paper can be used to make tracing easier.

    5. Then, adhere orange, yellow and white shapes to black paper (figure B). Leave a small space between each piece.

    6. Cut adhered shapes away from black paper (figure C), leaving a thin black mat around the edges.

    7. Glue nose and "cheek" embellishments to candy corn shape. Then, use black pen to add remaining facial features.

    8. Glue matted photo and journaling plaque to background paper and add completed candy corn where desired. Use black pen to detail the edge of the candy corn and create the appliqued effect.

    Useful Tips:

    • Alternately, pieces can be layered and glued together, rather than to a background mat.

    • Foam dots can be used to add dimension between pieces.

    • Photo corners can be created by cutting small, square paper scraps diagonally in half.
