Three cheers for paper dolls! Watch this video to see Ruth White transform paper dolls to mirror the expressions and coloring of the real cheerleaders.

Ruth White alters paper dolls to create the positions, uniforms, coloring and expressions to mirror her daughter and fellow cheerleaders.

    Scissors
    Paper in assorted colors
    Pens

    1. Begin by cutting doll across midriff (figure A).

    2. Then, cut legs apart (figure B). Reposition as desired (in this example, White positions the legs to represent cheerleader's "splits".)

    3. Cut arms from another doll (figure C) to create correct proportion. (In this example, the arms need to be lengthened to extend pom-poms.)

    4. Add paper skirt to hide altered legs.

    5. Cut sleeves from the shirt to mirror the tank tops worn by the actual cheerleaders. Embellish with geometric paper shapes (figure D) to reproduce the color-blocking on the actual uniforms.

    6. Finally, add hair and facial features to accurately depict the cheerleaders in the photo (figure E).

Sandi's Tip: To further personalize paper dolls, replace facial features with an actual photograph taken at close range and reduced or enlarged to the correct size.
