Ruth White alters paper dolls to create the positions, uniforms, coloring and expressions to mirror her daughter and fellow cheerleaders. Paper doll kit Scissors Paper in assorted colors Pens - Begin by cutting doll across midriff (figure A).
- Then, cut legs apart (figure B). Reposition as desired (in this example, White positions the legs to represent cheerleader's "splits".)
- Cut arms from another doll (figure C) to create correct proportion. (In this example, the arms need to be lengthened to extend pom-poms.)
- Add paper skirt to hide altered legs.
- Cut sleeves from the shirt to mirror the tank tops worn by the actual cheerleaders. Embellish with geometric paper shapes (figure D) to reproduce the color-blocking on the actual uniforms.
- Finally, add hair and facial features to accurately depict the cheerleaders in the photo (figure E).
Sandi's Tip: To further personalize paper dolls, replace facial features with an actual photograph taken at close range and reduced or enlarged to the correct size.
