Painted vellum -- featured here -- is only one variety of vellum available today.

This sunny page uses vellum in a traditional manner -- with the photograph layered over it. The sunflower pattern complements the photo's garden theme.

This page was created by using two halves of a vellum trellis design. One part was cut and used in the bottom corner element; the other portion was reversed and used to accentuate the photograph.

Paper and vellum was layered to create this "Ladybug" page.

The wide variety of vellum available today makes it easy to achieve of variety of semi-transparent effects.

    • When working with vellum, a glue stick seems to be the most effective adhesive. Because vellum is semi-transparent, it's important to hide the adhesive behind patterned areas.

    • Don't be afraid to play with vellum! Many different looks can be achieved just by layering vellum over colored or patterned paper.

    • Vellum can be cut, folded and added to pages as accents. In the "Sunflower" page (at right), the vellum is folded and used to hold a "bouquet" of sunflowers.

    Ladybug Page

Designer Paulette Jarvey uses vellum to create a page that's "cute as a bug!"

    Materials:

    Painted vellum with ladybug design
Patterned paper (for this project, rose, ivy and colorful red/black checked patterns were selected)
    Black paper
    1" and 1/2" circle punches
    Black pen
    Acid-free glue stick
    Photograph

    1. Crop the photo and mat with 1/8" red mat, followed with 1/8" black mat.

    2. Next, trim yellow rose paper to fit within the accent border of the ladybug vellum. Hide adhesive behind ladybugs on corner areas and adhere to rose paper.

    3. Adhere combined panel to background paper (off-set slightly to the right).

    4. Then, glue matted photo and journaling plaque in place.

    5. Use circle punch to make two black and two checked circles. Punch two heads from black paper using 1/2" punch.

    6. Cut checked circles in half to make "wings" and glue to black bodies. Add heads.

    7. Glue ladybugs to page and use black marker to draw antennae.

    8. Check checked paper into four 1" strips. Glue to outside of painted vellum.
