Creating hand-lettered titles and journaling are fun ways for pre-teens to personalize their pages.

Scrapbooking is a great way for teens to document their activities, events and rites-of-passage.

    Ages 6-9

    • To minimize expense, allow kids to utilize your leftover paper and cardstock scraps for their projects.

    • Keep supplies simple. Safety-tip scissors, glue sticks and 8-1/2" x 11" pages are all that's needed for this age group and skill level.

    • Journaling templates (figure A) teach kids to draw straight lines and practice journaling.

    • Finally, remember to cut long border stickers in half (figure B). Not only is this a cost-cutting method, but it also makes stickers easier for smaller hands to maneuver.

    Preteen (10-13)

    • At this age, kids can begin experimenting with letter templates, punches and decorative scissors to design and add dimension to pages.

    • Intermediate-level adhesives -- such as tape runners -- can be successfully used.

    • One of the most popular tools among kids is a photo template (figure C), with a shape that can be traced directly onto the photograph -- which is cut along the tracing -- to create interesting photo shapes.

    Teen

    • The teen skill level is advanced enough to accommodate the use of adult tools. Often teens begin shopping for supplies and budgeting for the hobby.

    • Skill level and age allow teen scrapbookers to use larger albums.

    • Advanced tools -- such as a personal trimmer -- may be used with caution.

    • Punches are used to create graphic elements, and teens begin to add dimension to pages.

    • Finally, one material important to this age group is the memorabilia pocket ( figure D), which can store important keepsakes.
