Your photo album should be as special as the photographs within. Designer Lisa Yoonchalard uses slipcovers to refurbish an old photo album and give it a personalized look.

    Materials:

    Photo album
    1-2 yards fabric
    1 large button
    Silk cord or nylon rope
Needle & thread (or sewing machine)
Fabric glue or hot glue gun (optional)
    Kraft or butcher's paper
    Clothespins
    Medium-tipped black marker
    Chalk

    1. Begin by selecting fabric. Thicker fabrics should be used for machine-sewing and to cover heavily patterned or textured albums. Thinner fabrics can be used for hand-sewn covers and to cover an album with a lightly colored or textured surface.

    2. Once fabric is chosen, make album pattern. Place fabric face down on work surface and cover with a layer of kraft or butcher's paper.

    3. Then, open album and place on top of paper. Trace around the album. Include notches at the top and bottom of the album's spine so that the cover fits well (figure A).

    4. Remove album from paper's surface. Cut paper pattern and place on fabric. Use chalk to trace around the pattern onto the fabric.

    5. Place open album over the fabric. Fold fabric into front and back cover and secure with clothespins. Trim any excess and pin in place (figure B). Remove photo album.

    6. Then, sew edges around the cover.

    7. Mark placement of button and cord.

    8. Next, sew cord in place and sew button slightly over the cord so that end doesn't show. Be sure to knot both ends of cord to prevent unraveling (if desired).

    9. Finally, place photo album back into the cover, wrap the cord around the book several times (figure C), and wrap the end around the button to secure.
