Stickers often get lost on a background. Here, Joy Macdonell mats baseball stickers to make them "pop" from the page.

A baseball card can serve as a photograph in a layout, but it also has important information on the backside. The solution to displaying any photo or card of this type is to create a transparent, hinged protector.

Macdonell cleverly disguises the "hinge" and attached it to the mat with a strip of bright red cardstock.

Reporting from the New York party crop, Joy Macdonell shares tips for matting with stickers. Macdonell also creates a hinge that allows the matted photo to flip and reveal important information -- like the baseball stats in this example -- on the back of the photo.

    Materials:

    Stickopotamus™ Vintage Sporting Goods stickers
    Blue cardstock
    White cardstock
    Red cardstock
    Grey cardstock
    Acid-free adhesive

    1. Create a mat that allows for the photo or memorabilia to be turned over. First, place the photo or memorabilia in into the corner of the page protector. Trim the protector to fit photo or memorabilia, leaving one side approximately 1/2" larger than the photo.

    2. The protector will have two closed edges and two open edges around the photo. Use an adhesive to close one open side of the protector. Leave top open to allow photo to be easily removed.

    3. Cut a very thin mat from blue cardstock, then a thin mat from grey cardstock.

    4. Adhere the 1/2" larger piece of photo protector surrounding the photo to the blue mat.

    5. Cut 1/2" strip of red cardstock to cover the extra 1/2" of protector.

Tips for Embellishing Mats with Stickers

    • Vary mat sizes for visual interest.

    • Stickers are best used to enhance larger mat sizes. Consider adding writing along the edges of larger mats.
