... the journaling underneath. And because the vellum is semi-transparent, the journaling is also visible through the lighter portions of the vellum photo.

When used to optimal effect, vellum can create a look of softness and elegance almost unparalleled. Here, Anna Griffin -- on location in Salt Lake City -- offers a few ideas for using vellum to complement heritage photographs.

    Multi-Bordered Frame

Printing copies or scanned images directly onto vellum can give any photograph a completely different look. In this project, Griffin uses vellum to create the appearance of four frames with a three-dimensional effect -- by only matting the photo once!

    1. Laser print heritage photo onto vellum paper.

    2. Use a die cut frame as a guide to crop your photo. For best results, crop the photo from the back, leaving a 1/4" border.

    3. Mount the photo and frame to a light colored paper to complete.

    Vellum Jacket

Griffin creates a vellum jacket with doors that open to reveal journaling.

    1. Laser print heritage photo onto vellum paper.

    2. To create the jacket, use a 10" x 7" piece of plain vellum. Fold the sides into the middle horizontally.

    3. Cut vellum photo down center and mount to right and left sides of the jacket.

    4. Insert journaling inside the jacket (when jacket is closed, words will show through the photo).
