Landscape Basics In this segment, Chris Chianelli learns some of the basics about setting up a digitally controlled train set. Chris's guest is George Riley of Athearn (TM) Trains.
Important: This demonstration shows provides some of the basic information for assembly and operation of these particular models and accessories. There are variations in assembly for each particular model. Read and carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Setting up an HO train set that is digitally (DCC) equipped is not as complicated as you might expect. The one shown in this segment (figure A) was set up in a single weekend. The main steps are painting a plywood base, installing track and hooking up a few wires.
- The main challenge comes in the aesthetics of creating a miniature landscape with buildings, trees, and other features (figure B). Most of the individual items in the set come pre-assembled from the hobby shop, so tedious assembly is minimized.
- The key in creating a miniaturized landscape is the establishment of miniature vignettes within the landscape, each of which forms a separate but contiguous element within the overall landscape (figure C).
- Vignettes can incorporate a variety of miniatures (figure D) -- people, buildings, cars, trucks and even animals -- to give the tiny landscape "life."
- The components and accessories for a train set like these come mostly as modular components (figure E) that can be put together easily. Components include a locomotive engine, assorted train cars, tracks, a controller, and additional landscape accessories.
- The track pieces simply snap together (figure F) and can be set up on a floor or carpet as well as s fixed substrate like plywood.
- The track shown in this segment can be removed from the plastic road-bed (figure G) and, if desired, painted with fleck-stone paint to give the appearance of a gravel ballast.
- Hobby shops often stock hundreds of choices of model trains (figure H), so you'll scarcely be limited in your selection.
- Selections include accurate reproductions ranging from vintage classics up to contemporary locomotives that are seen today (figure I).
- You can also select from pre-assembled models or kits. Many HO models come pre-assembled and essentially ready to use, right out of the box (figure J).
In the segment that follows, Chris gets advice from George Riley on how to give your train landscape a look of realism by using trees, backdrops and other accessories.
