Muncie, IndianaThe RC park in Muncie, Indiana was built on 1,000 acres of cornfield and is home to a club with more than 10,000 members. It's also the site of the AMA -- Academy of Model Aeronautics.
According to Jay Mealy, programs director at the AMA, the mission of their organization is to promote and protect the sport of aero-modeling in the US. He also notes that Muncie is an ideal location for the organization since it is located geographically and demographically in the center of the country. As such, the facility is within a single day's travel time for about 75 percent of the organization's members.
The AMA administration building (figure A) is an architecturally impressive structure, and is located amidst multiple flying sites on 1,000 acres of land. Specialized flying areas are available for flying free-flight, control-line and radio-controlled models.
The main radio-control field, known as Stage Center, has two paved runways -- each 730 feet long. Every year thousands of AMA-member hobbyists visit Muncie to take advantage of this impressive flying facility (figures B,C,D and E). Once a week, the public is invited to watch the hobbyists flying their planes, and to learn about RC flying.
