In this DIY special Chris Chianelli, host of DIY Radio Control Hobbies, attended the Top Gun radio-control scale-model competition held annually in Lakeland, Florida. This is a serious demanding competition, bringing together some of the world's most talented and accomplished builders and flyers of scale-model planes. But not everything has to be so serious. To that end, in this segment Chris provides detailed step-by-step instructions for how to make a replica of his famed "raggedy visor." No ordinary hat -- nor yet a visor exactly -- Chris's trademark headwear was custom-designed, and perfected through years of engineering, to shade the eyes just the right amount for radio-control flying. The alfresco top was fashioned so as to avoid mussing Chris's distinctive coif. If you'd like to make a raggedy visor just like the one that Chris wears on DIY's Radio-Control Hobbies, here's what you'll need: Scissors One baseball hat Ability to wear with confidence
Steps:
- Start with a baseball-style hat made from cotton canvas or similar fabric.
- With ordinary scissors (preferably dull, for a more "raggedy" effect), begin by cutting around the outer circumference of the hat's sun-visor, following the line of the outer stitching (figure A).
- Continue cutting all the way around the front of the visor. Technique is not critical. (You can use the falloff as a boomerang.)
- To begin cutting out the top of the hat, for the open-air look, turn the hat inside-out and begin cutting at the opening at the back of the hat (figure B).
- Continue cutting, being careful to avoid cutting out the hat's logo -- particularly if your hat is similar to the one shown in our demonstration. When you get to the logo, turn the hat back right-side-out and trim around the top of the logo (figure C).
- Resume cutting at the same height as before until you've completely cut the top out of your hat.
- Your Chianelli raggedy-visor is now ready to wear (figure D). For added panache, wear with a rakish tilt.
